Western Adventure #21: A Full Day at Devils Tower

Day 21-8/23/2024

                                                            Our morning view

In the morning after breakfast, we drove to the visitor center and parked to do the 1.5 mile loop around the base of the tower. The trail is entirely paved, and we enjoyed the views along the way. At one point, we had a really good cell signal, so Vince called Claudia to wish her a happy birthday. We talked to her for a little while, then had to move on. We took our time going around the loop. We were also noticing and hearing all the people climbing on the Tower. You can see some of them in these pictures. You might have to zoom in to see them. We were dismayed to see so many trees down from a storm they had had on Monday of the week we were there.

When we got back to the camper, we ate lunch and rested outside in our chairs, reading, writing, and crocheting. Vince might have taken a nap. We were pure lazy because it was a hot day. We didn’t want to be in the camper, but the breeze was nice outside. At one point, we went for a walk and talked to the camp host. She was telling us about the storm and that they had just opened up the campground right before we got there. Indeed, we'd noticed that they were doing a lot of cleaning of the property and that there were quite a few campsites available.

This was a sculpture that is supposed to represent smoke.

We saw so many turkeys in this campground. We've been seeing them in flocks all over the place. So here are some pictures of the turkeys.

After dinner, Vince was inside. I was sitting outside when a family pulled up in the site in front of us. I went over to ask them if they wanted me to take their picture at their campsite with the tower in the background. They said yes. I took several pictures of different angles. I hope they were pleased with the pictures.

We sat outside during the evening and noticed a peregrine falcon flying around, fishing in the Belle Fourche River. Vince got a couple of pictures of him with his camera zoomed in.

We took our evening walk and got prepared to leave tomorrow. Here are some evening pictures of the Belle Fourche River for you to enjoy.
