Day 47–9/18/2024
The weather was still bad the next morning, so we decided to just visit the visitor centers and lodges. The first place we went was Jenny Lake Visitor Center. There are two buildings at this complex—a gift shop and the visitor center. We thought we would get the passport stamp at the gift store. We went in and found some stickers and a magnet, but no passport station. Instead, we had to go to the visitor center to get the passport stamp. We didn’t go on any hikes because it was too drizzly outside.
We took a drive out to Jenny Lodge, but it was so small. We met the Buskirks at the Menors Ferry historic site close to Moose to find out what the plan was for the next day. We decided to meet up with the group at Moose the next day and ride with them to do a scenic drive through the park with a lot of stops along the way.
After we parted, we decided to take a drive up Antelope Flats Road. We found a scenic drive on Gros Ventre Road up to Lower Slide Lake and Atherton Creek Campground. On the way up, we found out about the Gros Ventre Slide which produced the lake with a natural dam. We found out a couple of years later the dam broke and caused devastation in Kelly, WY, a town near our campground. One can clearly see where the slide happened and the beautiful lake it produced. We also liked the campground up there, but I doubt we would take Faye up there. Here are some pictures of that beautiful drive.
This lake was formed when a lot of rock and soil slid down the mountain and made an earthen dam, stopping up the Gros Ventre River.
A family of mule deer crossed the road as we were making our way back down.
