Western Adventure #3-Hiking in Hot Springs

Day 3 -8/5/2024

The rest of our crew travels from West Memphis to Hot Springs today. Meanwhile, Vince and I went for a good long hike up the Gulpha Gorge trail which leaves from our campground. The Gulpha Gorge Trail is very steep and twisty. Here is a picture of the trail as we were returning to Gulpha Gorge Campground.

Our next trail, the Goat Rock Trail, has an outcrop of rock called Goat Rock. It is basically an overlook. We got some fantastic views of the area from there.

Then we got on the Upper Dogwood Trail which was a fairly level trail. We saw some deer in the woods and on our path on this trail. I got some pictures and video.

We hopped on the Hot Springs Mountain Trail for just a bit. It was there that we saw an old rock shelter. There was some history about the shelters. They were places that people would rest as they hiked in the mountains. Most of the people who hiked on the trails were patients at the bathhouses. Part of their recovery was to get out and hike.

Right at the shelter, we got back on the Gulpha Gorge Trail to finish our lollipop trail for the day. It took us 2 hours to hike it, and we logged 3 1/2 miles. Here's a picture of our map with the trails marked in teal.

Our group started arriving this afternoon. We helped get them situated as much as possible without getting too close to David and Linda. We won’t see very much of them on this leg of our journey.😢

The rest of the day was dinner, sitting around and talking with our friends, and getting ready for bed and another big day tomorrow in hot and steamy Hot Springs National Park.
