Western Adventure #51: Encampment

Day 51–9/22/2024

We watched CrossPoint North because our church’s livestream was terrible. Very glitchy. After lunch, we decided to go to Encampment while the others went back to Snowy Range to find moose. Since we already have moose pictures, we passed. Riverside and Encampment are very quaint towns with gravel streets. We went to the GEM—Grand Encampment Museum. It was a gem. We went into the museum first and left our donation. It was very informative about the history and industry of the area. Mostly copper mining. We peeked in the windows of the old historical buildings.

The taller structure is the ice cream parlor and bakery. The one to the right is the saloon. The last building on the right is an old newspaper office. It was moved from a ghost town called Battle.

Aerial Tramway used to transport copper ore from the mine to Encampment

We also saw the two-story outhouse. Crazy! It's two-story because in the winter, the snow would get so deep. And apparently, they don't want one to use it now. 😂 I had to take some of the pictures through fencing.

We made our way to the smelter ruins, but there was no place to park. We made an old man mad because of how we parked, and Vince had walked away with his door hanging open. 🙄

Meanwhile, the other group saw bull, cow, and calf moose all together as they were leaving Snowy Range. I was glad they got good pictures of the family.

It had been a good day of exploring and learning. Bonus that the other group got great pictures of the moose family.
